The ANA show in Denver last week was slightly better than I expected.  The show was still somewhat slow but we did some business and were able to purchase a few nice coins.  The most disappointing part of the show was no auction and no on site grading.  Being a major show and having no grading and no auction is just pathetic.  This would have made the show much stronger and brought in more collectors.  I was shocked the ANA would hold a show with no auction.  For that reason, they should give the auction companies tables in the back of the room and let the dealers who actually set up a nice display and sell coins have the front tables.  Who wants to walk into a major coin show and see a bunch of people sitting in front of their computers taking consignments from dealers and collectors?  That could easily be done in the back of the room.  As for the city, Denver is a great city.  It was clean, had nice people, and great restaurants.  If you didn't know, coin dealers love to eat.  However, as far as being a coin town with a strong retail market it's non-existent.  If there was an annual show in Denver, I believe the retail market could possibly grow.  As long as there is a major auction and on site grading it would attract dealers and collectors from all over.  Market Report: The market continues getting stronger on PQ coins.  Nice PCGS + coins are the hot thing and are selling way over PCGS + pricing.  Prices are only going up and nice material is going away.  Last weeks grey sheet hit the nail on the head.  "Quality coins shine, other's decline".  We look forward to seeing everyone at the Long Beah Coin Expo May 31 - June 2.

The Central States Show in Schaumburg last week had to be one of the worst shows we have ever attended.  Going in to the show we knew it was going to be slow, but not as slow as it was.  We still can't figure out why they would have a major show in such a bad location.  There was no life at the show.  No public attendance.  You could practically roll bowling balls down the isles or play football catch and not have any interference.  However, when you have shows like this you need to buy your way out of the show.  We were able to pick up some superb key date Morgans.  We purchased an 1889-CC PCGS MS64DMPL CAC and an 1881-O PCGS MS66.  The 1889-CC is "black and white" and looks like a PROOF 65.  It is a total GEM and a one of a kind coin.  The 1881-O MS66 is also a one of a kind coin.  It's blast white and looks like a MS67.  We have handled a few different 1881-O MS66 dollars and not one of them could come close to this one.  These are dates you never come across and are special to have.  Market Report:  The market continues to get stronger on PQ coins.  Auction prices are bringing crazy numbers and dealers and collectors are fighting to buy anything nice.  Nice PCGS + coins are the hot thing and are selling way over PCGS + pricing.  Prices are only going up and nice material is going away.  New purchases will be up later this week and next.  Mike's Coin Chest
